On Wednesday evening Spencer & Jerry Rowan had a combo-show to do at the Holiday Inn Arena in Binghamton, NY for a trade show. I was invited to come along, primarily to do sound for them.
Hotel room and meals were all paid for us! (Plus Spencer paid me for the work.)
We went up Tuesday afternoon -- Jerry drove. Got to the hotel around 6pm, dropped our stuff off in the room and went to the banquet room & did some tests (sound tests, etc). They had rented & set up a 20'x16' stage, and a sweet sound system!
Got dinner at the hotel restaurant, talked with our cute waitress (who coincidentally is visiting College Park this weekend).
Jerry isn't used to staying up past normal hours (since he has 2 kids), so Spencer & I spent some time at the hotel bar when he went to bed. We did magic for the 2 chick bartenders & some of the patrons. But the hotel bar closed at 11pm. We asked one of the bartenders if there's anything to do around the area and she directed us to an Irish bar called Dillingers a block away, dropped her name & the name of the owner & a bartender for us.
We left the hotel and thought we were following her directions, but turns out we headed the exact opposite way. A chick stopped us on the sidewalk asking if there was anything going on that-a-way and we told her we didn't know & where we were trying to go. She led us to Dillingers, giving us the tour of the only drinking block (State St.), and we popped in (she headed elsewhere).
We ordered 2 shots of Apple Jacks and the bartender said $5. "Was that $5 total, or each?" we thought aside. (Each is what we're used to in Baltimore.) Spencer handed him a twenty, and got $15 in change. Sweet!
So we decided if drinking in Binghamton was that cheap (and it is!), we were gonna bar hop, doing shots along the way, just like we never do. (We never do, actually.)
We hopped along a few bars with a few shots until we came to a place that was our style and stayed there -- "Flashbacks."
Flashbacks is an eccletic mix of stuff from the 50s-70s, including Blue Brothers statues and a multi-colored light-up disco dance floor like I've never seen in person.
There weren't many people in there, which was fine. We quickly made friends with almost everyone in there including the bartender, and not just by doing magic (which we were).
We stayed there till close (@1am, familiar?), and actually didn't leave till ~1:30am when the chick I was talking to was ready to leave.
So, interesting details:
A lesbian gave me her number. Whoa baby. 8-O
A cool, well-spoken black guy gave Spencer & I his number. He wanted us to come to his girlfriend's bar, and she'd give us the hook-ups. ;P
And the cute chick with glasses I was talking to traded txts with me. [Spencer & I intended to come back to Flashbacks after our show Wed night; though we only did to get a quick shot before getting pizza.]
Tasty pizza at a pizzeria called Big Daddy's -- yeah, "Big Daddy's", I love it. =)
We jammed & played around Wed afternoon; Jerry juggling, Spencer card-throwing, I was practicing my coin sleights & tricks.
The show Wed night went well; good crowd, no technical problems.
Hob-nobbed & drank for free afterwards at the hotel bar with some of the trade show goers, did a little magic there too. Fun times.
Got up at 7am to come home Thurs morning. It had lightly snowed overnight. ^_^
Sara & I hit Arundel Mills in the evening, and I got two shirts from Hot Topic.
The first is a black hoodie I've wanted since before Christmas: it has Gir in his puppy dog suit big on the front, and the words "DoomDoomDoomDoom" down one sleeve. They only had one left on the clearance rack, my size, marked from $45 to $18!
The second is a black T-shirt with a large green 4-leaf clover on the front & the number 13 in the middle of it in black. It looks painted on, with splatter. I love it.
I miss my Lucky shirt from college -- it was bright green with a shamrock and just the word "Lucky" on the front, underlined. Not "Get Lucky" or "I'm Lucky," just "Lucky." I liked the simplicity of just the one word, which could imply multiple meanings. ;P
I've already made a great playlist of Irish & drinking songs for St. Patrick's Day.

Vigilantes
Must acquire The Boondock Saints on DVD and watch it over & over.
Saw it again tonight for the first time in years -- awesome.
In my mind, on the surface it's just like Johnny The Homicidal Maniac, but with guns and stricter killing conditions. >:-]
"We could kill everyone!"
"So what do you think?"
"I'm strangely comfortable with it."

Guidelines?
Sara cooked up this crazy (but genius) conceptualization of the qualities of a girl who would be ideal for me.
Positive qualities on top, negative ones on the bottom -- relative to, of course, my point of view (from Sara's interpretation, lol!).
The colorful sphere in the middle is a kind of baseline, an amalgamation of all of these qualities in moderation.
The red line is my lower limit of the level of qualities -- "the figurative She" must possess at least such-and-such amount of each dotted category.
The blue line is my upper limit -- having more than that level of those qualities might be "too much" for me to handle, or keep/make me happy.
The zone in-between the red & blue lines would be ideal. Note the required qualities, as well as the necessary-to-avoid ones.
Do click on the image to see the full-sized version.
Sara then charted the qualities of certain girls I know, or have dated, based on her understanding. I omitted those lines for privacy reasons (my own magnanimity/nobleness) but it makes sense to see them as outliers on the chart. In particular the correlation is drawn in that what I'm supposedly looking for becomes charted as a semi-circle (red & blue lines), and past girls' lines are zigzags across the chart... Interesting.
I remember posting a silly girlfriend guideline kind of thing way-way back in high school on my website, and it broke a few hearts over several months...!
Anyway, it's a bit of harmless fun. Nothing to change the world (or my world) over. And I wouldn't want someone 100% like me.
As stated in a favorite song of mine:

And as usual, Billy Joel has something applicable too:
Don't go changing / To try and please me / You never let me down before. / Ooh ooh ooh ooh / I just want someone / That I can talk to / I want you just the way you are. [Billy Joel, Just The Way You Are]

Brainish
I just typed up a long entry here about my confusion and postulation about how I seem to have something along the lines of adult ADHD. I don't; I realized at the end of my verbose description that I simply have no focus. Nothing to focus my efforts, intellect, or emotions on.
Here's the summary of what I erased.
Symptoms:
1.) I'm in the middle of doing something and a thought pops into my head (something else I need to do, or a fact I want to look up, etc) and almost immediately I pause my current task and do the new one (coming back to the original at some point later).
That might not seem crazy, but think of some things you might be doing & wouldn't otherwise just interrupt...
I remember reading once that Leonardo da Vinci had a similar condition; it led to a number of his artworks never seeing completion.
2.) Impulsiveness. Like #1, but also just doing things on instinct, or with complete disregard for consequences.
C.) Thinking of 50 million things at once, actively, and planning them all out. Or wanting to do 50 millions things at once.
Well, I'm certainly keeping my brainpower functioning at a high level. I just wish it would shut off sometimes, cause it leads to...
IV.) Can't fall asleep except after lying for a good hour, sometimes more, even when I'm very tired.
The average time for someone to fall asleep is 7 minutes. Well, I balance the average for everyone who's knocked out as soon as they hit the pillow!
I don't have a problem with concentration, and I'm not easily distracted. I've just seem to become very impulsive combined with a plethora of thoughts at all times.
And the only way I can avoid these is by diving deep into something and not surfacing or paying any attention to the outside world. That's why creating art from midnight to 4am is perfect -- everyone's asleep and I'm busy & focused.

Clip of Time
I've seen a lot of my friends this week so far...
Sunday -- "That's What She Said Day" plans fell thru / didn't materialize. Drove around Bmore in the early evening for a bit (exploring & killing time). Got dinner with Peter [tried a new sub at Subway, which is kind of a big deal because previously I only ever ate one, now I've added "Sweet Onion Teriyaki Chicken" to my list of... 2], then we hung out at Spencer's with Spencer & Sara. Watched Hellboy 2 on bluray, followed by playing Left 4 Dead.
Monday -- evening at Jason & Megan's, which included all of our usual good stuff. =) [Had that same sub again to make sure I liked it.]
Tuesday -- Sara was over all afternoon and we job-searched our respective fields. Among various things, we both applied to serious jobs at the British Embassy in DC. I've started to apply to jobs in DC instead of just Baltimore-area. Everyone knows how much I love DC; to work & then live there would be wonderful, the only problem being that all of my friends are in/around Baltimore...
Spencer, Sara, and I watched movies & a few episodes of Pushing Daisies (love it!) for the rest of the night. Unfortunately having a cup of Starbucks coffee combined with sitting down for several hours plus some of the anxiety of our particular topics of conversation drove me nuts, and I was wired all night. It's nice to know they care about my emotions though.
Came home and popped in Cruel Intentions at 3am; hadn't watched it in quite a while, needed to. ;P
Also, found new Limited Edition Bicycle playing cards at Target -- love 'em. High quality, soft edges, nice back design/color, and the custom Joker's face looks like me. ;P
Wednesday -- Earlier-than-normal hang out time with Sara, we picked up Spencer's birthday present she bought [shhhh!], then went to Noble's (bar across the street from Illusions) for a bite to eat (late, late lunch) & to play NTN Trivia (a different game type than Jason & my normal one).
Left her at Illusions, then picked up Shannon and she & I got sushi & martinis at XS, a place I have wanted to go to for a few years actually. That fell into place perfectly, just like I like. Good times there! ^_^
Dropped her off at home later on, then went over to Jim's... He gave me a sw33t silver Kingdom Hearts Keyblade (the Oathkeeper!) keychain he had picked up in Japan back in the Fall! (Beautiful, high quality craftsmanship -- what a great souvenir!) We played a little bit of Devil May Cry 4, then we went to Spencer's to play Jim's game, Fittest (similar to but different than Geometry Wars, and still not ready to be released), as well as Call of Duty: World At War split-screen deathmatch (on the 7' projection).
Wrote this blog entry. Not entirely sure why. ;P

Two Step Process To Making Diavo Happy Instantly
Hehe, I found this while searching my ancient archived Thoughts entries (on my hdd) and just had to post it:
Two Step Process To Making Diavo Happy Instantly:
1.) Buy Cadbury Eggs, then
2.) Give them to Diavo --voila! an instantly happy Dave. =)
[FYI, original flavor Cadbury Eggs only please, hehe.]

Beautiful Weather in DC! ^_^
Sara & I almost always hang out Wenzdae nights. Just like I almost always hang out with Jason & Megan on Monday nights -- it's routine, and it's a good thing. =)
Due to temperatures in the upper 60s & her "newly acquired free time" Sara & I decided to hang out earlier than After Dinner.
So I was blasting fast techno & Happy Hardcore music (custom mix) in my car as I picked her up ~3pm in Baltimore and we spontaneously decided to go to DC to take advantage of the beautiful weather!
Zip down into the city and across NY Ave & Mass. Ave to DuPont Circle where we parked. Walked all around DuPont (every which-way), then started to head toward Farragut North when I decided it was my mission to locate the store "Chocolate Moose". After a little bit of searching, I told Sara what I was looking for. The name alone sparked her need to find it also [else we get left to our... "Moosey Fate!" --Zim]. I did find it!
Then we continued heading in that direction (which I think is south-er-ly), and we decided it would be an adventure to keep walking and at every intersection always cross the street whichever direction had the green light.
That started us more-or-less in a wide direction towards Chinatown. So we purposely directed ourselves that-a-way.
I remembered how to get to Chinatown from DuPont by walking. Damn my memory is good. ;P
We split orange chicken & crab wontons at Wok & Roll while snickering that we each used to eat there a lot with our respective ex'es. ;P ;P
After eating, we went to the Chinatown Starbucks, drinking upstairs at a nice window view after inventing a word search game from a text-as-art cover to a section in the Express newspaper titled "Spring Arts Preview". We did that for a while, also looking for PT Cruisers out the window on the street (I eventually came up from way behind & won tonight's Spot The PT Cruiser game, but I always win it, hehe).
Then took the Metro from Chinatown back to DuPont -- didn't feel like walking back. We both had DC Metro SmarTrip cards so yeah, we're hip to the jive there. ;P
On the drive back into Bmore, we blasted my "Chicky Pop-Hop" mix which I had made in the summer. It features songs by Gwen Steffani (Sweet Escape & Now That You Got It), Robyn, Brick & Lace, and Cascada. All chicks, somewhat poppy, somewhat hip-hoppy. It's a fun one.
This mix very strongly reminds me (us) of summer 2008 -- the best summer yet.
Hit 7-11 to grab drinks then it started to pour rain, which only helped it feel like a spring/summer evening. We went to Spencer's house to wait for him to come home from the bar. Sara & I played LittleBigPlanet for hours, messing around in the level editor, creating rocket cars & blowing stuff up. Fun times!
And that's my account of this spring-like day in February.
[Coincidentally, the last (and first) time I used these lyrics at the end of a post was middle of Feb last year:]

Know Thyself.
Good times in NY this weekend. Big family party (Mom's side, the Irish side).
Got to see my Uncle Dan for the first time in 6-7 years. He & his younger brother (obviously my uncle also) Ray are so much alike, even though 11 years separates them & they didn't actually grow up together/see much of each other over the years. They have similar personalities, and the same mannerisms/speech patterns/humor/etc/etc.
What's interesting is that I too share these traits...
And after talking with my Mom about some things (including what her dad was like, he died when I was ~6 years old) it's clear that our shared traits are genetic and not learned/environmental.
Which is pretty neat. ^_^
I like knowing why I am who/the way I am. It goes back to the ancient Greek saying "Know thyself."
I like to.

"Bang."
Just finished watching all of Cowboy Bebop series (might watch the movie tomorrow) as the clock stroked midnight.
Wow.
I've never seen a television show invoke so much emotion. [Emotion] primarily in the last 3 episodes, but the writing & artistic visuals are tops throughout the series.
Wow.
Spike Spiegel is my new hero! Cool, calm & collective, former-romantic now cynical, doesn't hesitate, refuses to die...
...sorry Malcolm Reynolds, you're bumped down. ;P

A 3am w/ sn0
It's 3am and I was just watching it snow. Snow illuminated in the streetlight. I can get lost & hypnotized watching snow fall.
Nobody knows it's snowing right now, cause it's 3am and you are all asleep.
I'm not.
Two nights ago (technically 6am) while driving home from Spencer's I saw a meteorite burning up as I drove down Rt 97. It started to streak, then fragment and fizzle into nothing. This was right in front of my car, along its path, not high in the sky. [Note: it's the second time I've seen such a thing up-close.]
Very special.
I can grab a deck of cards and create the illusion of magic for hours for you. But most of it is just trickery & skill.
Real magic is snow, and meteors. Gravity, emotions, magnetism, friendship.
In other news... been watching through the Cowboy Bebop series -- love it! It's really really good.
Cowboy Bebop predates Firefly by ~4 years. I love Firefly & always will, but I'm losing respect for Joss Whedon with each episode, you blatant copycat you. ':-/
Ed being like Gir goes a long way for my insanity! ^_^
I "acquired" the entire soundtrack (7 albums) and it's all jazz but with some western music, very cool. For my birthday Friday we went to dinner at Sakura, a tempanyaki Japanese steakhouse, and they were playing some of the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack on their in-restaurant radio! *meant to be*
"Ok? 3, 2, 1 -- let's jam!"
